High Desert Test Sites (HDTS) is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 2002 based in Joshua Tree, California. Founded on 100 acres owned by Andrea Zittel, HDTS supports experimental art in the high desert.
Dedicated to “learning from what we are not,” HDTS is an experiment that blends contemporary art with the unknown cultures of the desert, to see what new forms of art and insides emerge outside of pre-existing cultural centers.
If you’re lucky enough to be in town, twice a year, during their HDTS Art Tours, register for a tour or follow their online map to self tour the hundreds of artists showrooms, galleries and installations curated by the artistic locals who shaped Joshua Tree.
HDTS is known for this roving biennial events featuring artworks installed in diverse desert locations, and its programs that include performances, workshops, film screenings, publications, residencies, and excursions.
